“Hey! Are you listening?” Most of the time, every parent has found themselves talking to their little ones whose thoughts seem to be somewhere else. Listening and attention skills are critical in a child's development as they facilitate effective communication throughout life. Listening skills at an early age benefit him in school as well as in his social relationships. For children to become active listeners it is important that they use what they hear from you and others as part of their communication process.

Why Listening Skills are Important?

Besides better comprehension in the classroom, having active listening skills has many benefits. Active listeners tend to be better communicators, problem solvers, and show good commitment. Benefits of being an active listener are:

  • Fewer misunderstandings
  • Faster work rate
  • Improved resourcefulness
  • More self-reliance
  • Improved productivity

How can you help children improve their listening skills?

Kids are like sponges absorbing everything in their environment. So, this is the best time to teach your little one’s valuable skills. Parents and teachers can teach kids how to become an active listener by becoming active listeners themselves. This gives a reference to your child for developing his/her own listening habits. Parents and teachers can improve and boost your child’s listening skills in the following ways:

● Set a Good Example

Be it caregivers, teachers, or family, children tend to pick up on their actions and imitate their behavior. If you are constantly distracted when your child is speaking to you, then they will assume that this kind of behavior is normal. If you want your kid to be an active listener, you need to be a good listener as well.

When your child wants to narrate stories, take a break from what you are doing to listen to them. Spare some time to actively listen to what they are sharing and they will learn to do the same. Most importantly, maintain eye contact while talking to your child.

● Play Games that Improves Listening Skills

Improve your little one’s listening skills while having fun while you are at it!!! Games like Simon Says, Story Building or identifying animal noises help in developing listening skills in children in a fun and rewarding way. You can even come up with your own innovative listening games. Ask your child to build a structure using blocks while you are giving two-part, three-part, and four-part verbal instructions.

● Story Time

Many parents feel storytime as a means of making their children fall asleep. However, storytime also improves a child’s listening skills if you narrate it in an interesting way. Narrate an exciting story for your little one using different voices for different characters. As the story proceeds, ask them what they think will happen next since this will encourage your child to pay attention to the events in the story. Once you are done reading, ask your child what their favorite part of the story was and tell them to describe what happened in that part.

● Get your Child’s Full Attention

Encouraging your child to look at you while they are listening is important. This gets them into the habit of paying full attention to what is being said. While our kids need to pay just as much attention to boring topics as they do to interesting topics, achieving their attention through interesting conversations is a great way to improve their listening. Spend some time talking about your child’s hobbies and interests. Ask them questions or add to the conversation. By grabbing and maintaining their attention, they are practicing both good listening skills as well as active conversation.

If you want to improve your child’s listening skills, you should set a strong example. Give your child your full attention. Improving listening skills may take time, but the results will pay off a long time. Also, try new develop games or activities on your own that works well for you and your children.
