It's Happening: What to do When Your Child Throws a Tantrum in Public

Posted on 17 Feb by Admin | cooking 3 min read

Imagine you’re travelling by flight with your toddler when suddenly in mid-air he begins to throw a tantrum. He screams, he cries, he shouts and everyone’s staring at you, snickering and pointing fingers while you’re dying of humiliation inside.

As parents, these mortifying experiences are pretty common. If your child has had a breakdown in the middle of a crowded place, take comfort in knowing that you’re not alone. However, this doesn’t mean you have to endure this until your kids grow older! Tantrums do happen, quite often in public and your kid’s mental health is at stake. But you can teach your child self-control with these pro tips.

Prepare Yourself

Kids can lose their heads over just about anything under the sun. It’s not exactly predictable. But if you observe closely, there are some things that irk them most. It could be unexpected schedule changes, parental stress, or even fatigue. If you’re prepared and aware of their trigger points, controlling their tantrums can actually be a piece of cake

Preparation is key, start noting down everything that bothers your child and try your best to avoid it. For worst case scenarios, bring some distraction - a game, colouring books or toys to keep their mind busy and teach your child self-control.

Talk to Your Child

A lot of times we don’t realise that kids are a lot like us. They want to know what to expect. If your child is playing with a friend and you’re in a hurry, don’t rush in and grab them. Instead, you could approach them earlier and explain that you need to leave soon because you have to be somewhere. This not only gives your child the time to process the information but also is an easy way to avoid tantrums. Moreover, this is a great technique to teach your child self-control.

Set Behavioural Expectations

If you’re leaving home with your child, have a chat with your kids about where you’re going and what you’re likely to do. While talking to them, set your own expectations so your child is aware. If you're going to the grocery store, you could explain to them that there will be toys and they can look at them but you won’t be buying any. This way you’ve already established what is about to happen. You could also set ground rules like not running around the store.

Keep Calm

This is probably the most important tip for parents. If despite all your efforts, your child still throws a tantrum, which is very possible, the best thing you can do is to stay calm. Easier said than done? Well, it’s hard but practice makes perfect. Even though you might be fuming inside, don’t show that on your child because that’s what’s best for your kid’s mental health. Keep your voice low, talk slow and be comforting. Not only will this help calm you down, but it will also ensure that the tantrum doesn’t get any worse. Besides, your child will feel heard and this could turn into a learning experience where you teach your child self-control.
