Significance of Colors in Kid's life

Colors are one of the most noticeable attributes of the world around us. For kids, understanding color is an essential building block that they would use for learning in all areas of their life. Learning colors coincides with a child’s cognitive development. Their ability to differentiate between colors normally begins at the age of 18 months. Around this age, the kid starts noticing the differences and similarities between sizes, shapes as well as colors.

Although kids identify the differences, it takes longer for them to fully understand the different colors and perform activities such as matching/sorting on the basis of colors. Kids are naturally attracted to bright colors due to which most toys designed for toddlers and babies are brightly colored. During their preschool years, kids have a natural liking to see and understand the environment around them. Surrounded by a world of colors, using daily opportunities to discuss colors would be easy.

How to Teach Colors to Preschoolers?

  • Matching Colors:

The first step towards learning colors is by matching them. Games like color matching are a good way of teaching primary colors to preschoolers. You can make colored cards out of cardboard and place them on the table. Ask them to pick up two cards of the same color. The same can be performed with colored blocks or balls. This helps them to concentrate on that one color and learn to identify among the rest.

  • Color Flashcards:

Learning colors is a crucial part of every kid’s early education. So, schools and parents often opt for a more educational way of color flashcards. From focusing on colors to inducing the words along with color as pre-reading skills, color flashcards do it all.

  • Games:

I Spy is a popular fun game for kids that can help your child master colors without much pressure. Print off the color mats and point out at the mats to help your kid identify which color you are “spying”. For instance, the game goes something like this: You say, “I spy with my little eye, something that is red.” Then, point to the red color mat and ask your child “What can you spy that is red?”. This helps your toddler understand that the color has a specific name.

  • Color Bingo:

Create bingo tokens(colored pieces of paper or colored stickers) and hand out one token to each child. Give them crayons or colored pencils. Put up color cards and ask them to color in their boxes using the colors on the board in whatever order they choose. Then, start calling out the colors. Students need to mark each color as it is called out and say, “Bingo!” when they have it. Lastly, they need to repeat the colors as they check them with you.

  • While learning colors can be a long process, patience is essential to make it productive and fun. All these activities offer great practice in learning colors for your children. The more you mention colors, the easier it will be for your kids to store the information and use it. Home and preschool in Jayanagar like Yello are wonderful places for kids to learn colors.
